A Holistic View on Depression
I ask clients I work with to fill out a questionnaire before we meet. Yesterday, I received a one reminded me of all the surprising connections I had no way of knowing about when I worked in the conventional medical system.
Let me explain.
In the questionnaire, my client who suffers from depression described symptoms of waking up at 3 a.m., and suffering from maldigestion.
Ok, I thought, that makes sense. Depression is related to feelings of deep sadness that come from known or unknown reasons. The organs related to grief are the lungs, which have their peak activity time between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m.
My client’s symptom of sleeplessness correlated with her lungs peak activity time.
Even her maldigestion can be explained. In Chinese medicine, organs are paired. For example, one organ can be called the yin (i.e., the lungs), and its pair is called the yang (i.e., large intestine).
If your depression affects your lungs, then it makes perfect sense that your gut will automatically react, as well.
Our lungs hold the grief and the large intestine is all about letting go.
I was surprised to learn that these findings are supported by Western science, too.
Wouldn’t it be interesting if doctors treating depression chose a course of treatment that focused on breath work, nutritional changes and addresses the conflict behind it?
